Kia Michel, M.D.
Dr. Kia Michel is one of the leading prostate cancer experts in Los Angeles. He is an acclaimed prostate cancer robotic surgeon and has been one of the pioneers of prostate HIFU focal therapy in Southern California.
Dr. Michel is a leading robotic and prostate cancer surgeon. He has performed more than 1,000 robotic surgeries and has developed advanced techniques to allow men to recover their erectile function and urinary control after undergoing robotic prostate surgery.
Dr. Michel is also one of the pioneers of focal therapy in the United States. He has expertise in MRI fusion prostate biopsies and is one of the most experienced HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) specialists in the country. This acumen has allowed him to champion focal therapy for patients with localized prostate cancer. Dr. Michel has developed the first (and currently only) center in California, dedicated to focal therapy for patients with prostate cancer. Dr. Michel has an illustrious educational background. He completed his undergraduate education at Whitman College, where he was a Presidential Scholar for all four years. Dr. Michel subsequently attended the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he graduated with Honors. After completing his medical training, he was recruited by UCLA Department of Urology where he completed his residency. While at UCLA, he was recognized as a National Pfizer Scholar. After finishing his residency, Dr. Michel attained additional training and developed further expertise in urologic cancer surgery. During this time, Dr. Michel was actively involved with research in the field of urologic cancers. His efforts have been recognized by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Health, and the American Urological Association.
After completing his training in 2000, Dr. Michel joined the medical staff at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. Dr. Michel subsequently co-founded the reputable Comprehensive Urology Medical Group, located in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Towers in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Michel is a diplomate of the board of urology. He is a resource to his medical community and has helped train many other urologists in prostate cancer and robotic surgical techniques. Dr. Michel has been featured as a leading authority in numerous syndicated medical and news programs.
Robert S. Sanford, M.D.
Dr. Sanford is a highly experienced and respected urologist in Los Angeles. He has treated many patients with prostate cancer over the past several decades and is highly regarded by his colleagues. Dr. Sanford has held numerous leadership positions in urology including Chief of Urology at Cedars-Sinai and chairman of the Medical Education Committee. Dr. Sanford is dedicated to advancing urological care and serves at a clinical assistant professor at USC (University of Southern California).
Dr. Sanford graduated from Brooklyn College and New York Medical College. He interned at Cedars Sinai Medical Center (Cedars of Lebanon) Los Angeles and did his general surgery residency and urological residency at Jewish Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Sanford has been in the practice of Urology since 1971 and is one of the cofounders of the prestigious Comprehensive Urology Medical Group.
Arash Akhavein, M.D.
Dr. Arash Akhavein went to medical school at Tehran Azad Medical University in Tehran, Iran. He was among the top in his class and also aced the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE). Dr. Akhavein moved to Boston, MA, in 2008 and worked as a research fellow in Molecular Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, followed by clinical urology research at Massachusetts General Hospital (both major teaching hospitals for Harvard Medical School).
Being the son of an urologist, Dr. Akhavein was always drawn to this specialty in medical school. Subsequently, he completed a urology residency at University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, from 2010 to 2015. During residency, he continued his research with a focus on kidney stones and presented abstracts at the American Urological Association (AUA) meetings. Dr. Akhavein received a best abstract award at the 2013 annual meeting in San Diego, CA, for his research in stone disease.
After completion of his urology residency, Dr. Akhavein underwent one year of fellowship subspecialty training in advanced endourology and stone disease at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio under Dr. Manoj Monga (an international authority on endourology and stone disease and current secretary of the AUA). This allowed him to fine tune his minimally invasive endoscopic skills and become familiar with cutting edge treatment and prevention methods for kidney stones.
Dino DeConcini, M.D.
Dino performed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts and Science in 1987 and a Masters Degree in Biology in 1988. In 1986 he was a microbiology researcher at the Institut Pasteur and Scholar in the Paris Program with the department of French and Italian. He then received his medical degree from Columbia University P&S in 1992 also receiving grants for study in Mexico and the Paris University Hospitals.
Surgical training and Specialty urology were completed at Baylor College of Medicine at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Under the guidance of Dr. Peter T. Scardino (Now Chief of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering), Dino was trained in techniques for open and endoscopic surgery. The vast array of clinical material included Oncology, Stone disease, Trauma and Reconstruction, Congenital conditions, Infectious diseases, Pediatric urology, Fertility and Female Urologic problems.
In 1998 he moved to private practice in Los Angeles and began teaching residents at the LA County hospital as part of the USC urologic faculty. He also maintains a practice in Santa Monica since 2000 and has served at Chief of the Division of Urology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center from 2008-2010. He now specializes in Hospital and Out-Patient Urology with special attention to office imaging and minimally invasive techniques.
